Greenstar North America, the largest private processor of recyclables in the United States, has officially opened the largest recycling facility in San Antonio, Texas. The 180,000 square-foot, single-stream facility has the capacity to process 20,000 tons of recyclables per month.

The company has reported significant increases in its recycling rates across Texas markets, particularly in San Antonio. The recycling rates in San Antonio soared as high as 200% over the previous collection approach due to the implementation of a single stream collection system and the conversion of the city’s existing 18-gallon collection system to 95 gallon carts. Single stream processing allows the recyclables to be processed into one bin, resulting to more efficient collection of materials and a decrease in labor.

The new facility employs approximately 100 people and will accommodate single stream materials from other recycling programs in the central and south Texas regions. Greenstar also operates another recycling facility in San Antonio that processes an additional 3,000 tons of recyclable materials monthly.
San Antonio was selected as the location for Greenstar’s largest recycling facility because the city has the largest recycling program in Texas, serving as a hub to collect recyclable materials from other key regions across the state, said John Rabon, Southwest Regional Manager of Greenstar.

The company also chose Texas as its North American headquarters because it recognizes the state’s potential in terms of growth in recycling in the commercial and municipal sectors. Over the past two years, Greenstar has invested over $300 million in its recycling business in the United States, with $50 million invested in Texas. Its parent company, NTR plc, has invested a total of over $700 million in its US environmental businesses in the same period.
A private grand opening ceremony for Greenstar’s latest recycling facility was held on June 17, 2009. The facility was opened by the Honorable Julian Castro, the newly-elected mayor of San Antonio, and Mike Wynne, Chief Executive Officer of Greenstar Group.

Based in Houston, Texas, Greenstar North America is the leading recycling-led waste management company in North America, handling two million tons of recyclables annually through 14 processing facilities. The company is also the largest municipal recycler in Texas. Greenstar is a subsidiary of NTR plc, a leading global developer and operator of renewable energy and sustainable waste management, with operations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
