Office Depot service recycled nearly 1.5 million pounds of Tech waste in 2008

Office Depot has announced that the company had recycled a total of 1,421,439 lbs of technology in 2008 through its Tech Recycling Service.

First introduced in 2007, the Tech Recycling Service allows Office Depot customers to recycle e-waste, including computers, printers, media drives, and small televisions at more than 1,100 Office Depot locations in the continental United States.

Intechra, one of the largest technology recyclers in the US, handles the recycling for Office Depot. According to them, the most common items accepted by Office Depot’s service were printers (more then 12,000), computers (about 6,000), PC monitors (more than 6,000), and telephones (about 2,500).

The Tech Recycling Service works in three simple steps. First, the recycler must purchase a Tech Recycling Box at an Office Depot Store. The boxes are priced at $5, $10, and $15, and the price includes shipping, handling, and recycling. The technology products to recycle must fit into the box that was bought.

Finally, the Tech Recyling Box and its contents must be brought to a participating Office Depot Store.
