A 1,320-megawatt capacity tidal power plant is being proposed off the coast of several Korean islands.A $3-billion tidal power plant with a projected capacity of 1,320 megawatts will be built near Korea’s islands of Ganghwa, Jangbong, and Yeongjong, the JoongAng Daily reported recently. Construction on the 157.45-square-kilometer area of sea will reportedly be started by the government in 2017.
At least 4.5% of national household electricity demands and 60% of the surrounding area’s power needs will be supplied by the Incheon bay area project. The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs’ report on the project also stated that the plant could save around 3.54 million barrels of oil yearly and reduce the country’s carbon dioxide emissions annually by 1.01 million tons.
Plans will reportedly be finalized next year after an environmental impact assessment on the project. Korea also plans to build a 254-megawatt tidal power plant on Sihwa Lake in Gyeonggi province next year, the JoongAng Daily also said.
Korea’s first tidal power plant at one-megawatt capacity was built last May in Uldokmok on the island of Jindo, at South Jeolla province. The world’s largest tidal power plant, the 240-megawatt La Rance Tidal Barrage, is located in St. Malo, France.
A tidal power plant converts the energy of tides into electricity. It is the only form of renewable energy that is directly dependent on earth-moon motions and gravitational relationship.
