ACCIONA reinforces sustainability concept, issues supplementary dividend

ACCIONA reinforced its business model built on sustainability with a focus on energy, infrastructure and water during its annual shareholders’ meeting on June 4. The company will also be issuing a supplementary dividend of €1.85 per share, which will be issued July 1.

The company’s focus on sustainability aims to help ACCIONA mitigate the global financial crisis on its workforce of 34,500. It was emphasized during the meeting that the company installed 781 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity in 2008, bringing its total generation capacity to 4,781 MW. The company also avoided the emissions of seven million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in 2008, up 17% from 2007. It will also be selling its interest in the Spanish utility Endesa (part of Italy’s Enel) and simultaneously purchase its renewable energy assets.

ACCIONA also showcased its commitment to innovation. The company invested €71 million in research and development and innovation in 2008, up 82% from the previous year. The investment was directly responsible for 91 projects (up 36% from the previous year) and 48 patent applications.

ACCIONA Energy is one of the world’s largest renewable energy and sustainable development companies involved in solar PV and solar thermal plant development, wind turbine manufacture, wind farm development, mini-Hydro generation, biodiesel and bioethanol production, and retail sales. In 2008, Acciona had installed more than 6,000 MW of wind energy in 14 countries. The company also produces wind turbines with a 4% market share in 2008, ranking 7th in the world. ACCIONA owns Nevada Solar One, the 64-MW next-generation solar thermal plant in Nevada. It also owns 34% of one of the world’s largest solar photovoltaic plants.

ACCIONA Energy is part of the Acciona Group with interests in six main business lines: Infrastructure, Real Estate, Energy, Water, Urban and Environmental Services, and Logistics and Transport Services. The whole group reported total revenues of $1.395 billion for the Q1 2009. ACCIONA is listed on the selective IBEX-35 index as ANA.MC.
