The world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems announced June 9 that it has received an order for wind turbines for fellow Danish company DONG Energy’s 51 megawatt (MW) Karcino wind project in Poland.
Vestas received an order for 17 units of its V90 wind turbine, which has a capacity of 3.0 MW which are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2009. The Karcino wind farm is located on the northwest coast of Poland, near the town of Szczecin. The contract includes the supply, installation, and commissioning of the turbines, along with a five-year service agreement. The Karcino wind farm is expected to begin commercial operations in 2010. The wind farm will save annual emissions of almost 105,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
DONG Energy purchased the Karcino wind farm from Aktiv Wind ApS in March this year. It will be DONG Energy’s largest of its three wind farms in Poland. DONG Energy currently holds the operational Lake Ostrowo wind farm and is currently building the Karnice I wind farm in Poland, each with a 30-MW capacity. All three of DONG Energy’s Polish wind farms are located in the northwest coast and are all supplied by Vestas.
Vestas Wind Systems is the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, with a 19% global market share in 2008 and 35,500 wind turbines installed. It is headquartered in Randers, Denmark, with offices and production facilities throughout China, North America, and Europe. The company has the wind industry’s largest research and development unit. The company is listed on the NASDAQ OMX Copenhagen under ISIN DK00110268606. Its stock was up 0.64% on the June 10 trading day, closing at DK 394.00.

Wind energy is the company’s major growth division. Denmark currently draws 20% of its electricity from wind sources, and is an exporter of electricity sourced from wind.
