Semprius raises $ 4.6 million in Series B funding round
Semprius, a company based in Durham, North Carolina, said the amount will be used to complete development and begin field deployment of its solar modules to selected customers. Image sourced from STOCKXPERT Semprius, Inc., a company specializing in a printing process to make solar photovoltaics (PVs), is moving up with the $6.4 million it raised in a Series B funding round.
Printing is becoming a viable solar PV manufacturing method in producing thin film solar panels with silicon printed or deposited in a target substrate. One of the procedure’s advantages is the more economical use of silicon, an increasingly expensive component in PVs.
Semprius said it is focusing on the production of such low-cost, high-efficiency solar modules for utility-scale power generation. Its process prints semiconductors on any substrate, including glass, plastic, and other materials. Semprius is based in Durham, North Carolina and the amount raised will be used to complete development and begin field deployment of its solar modules to selected customers.
The funding round was joined by existing investors ARCH Venture Partners, Applied Ventures, Illinois VENTURES, and Intersouth Partners. They were joined by new investors In-Q-Tel and GVC Investment Fund.
“This company is developing truly breakthrough technology for solar and other important markets,” Kip Frey of Intersouth Partners said.
Other companies developing their PV printing technologies include Optomec, Imaging Technology International, and Innovalight, among others.
