Siemens Energy has received a follow-up order from Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) for the supply of key components for a 1.6-gigawatt (GW) power plant in India, to be delivered in late 2011. The order volume amounts to over €80 million.

Under the additional contract with BHEL, Siemens will provide the Barth II power plant with an SST5-6000 steam turbine, a water-cooled SGen5-3000W generator, a SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and controls system for the turbine-generators, and additional components for the second turbine-generator.

This is the second order that Siemens had received from its Indian licensee. This is the first for two steam turbine-generators. Roland Fischer, Chief Executive Officer of the Products Fossil Power Generation Business Unit of Siemens Energy, said that the second order from India will expand Siemens’s position in the market as a leader for supercritical steam turbine technology.

Against the backdrop of climate change, although coal is India’s most important source of energy, Fischer said that with Siemens’ supercritical steam turbines "operating at parameters of 580 degree Celsius and 250 bar,” high efficiency levels can be attained. By increasing the efficiency in a medium-capacity coal-fired power plant by even just one percentage point, the annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will be decreased, with savings amounting to approximately 80,000 metric tons.

Siemens Energy Sector, a division of Siemens AG, is a leading supplier of products, services, and solutions for power generation, transmission, and distribution. The company also engages in the extraction, conversion, and transport of oil and gas. In 2008, Siemens reported €22.6 billion in revenues, €33.4 billion in new orders, and a profit of €1.4 billion.
