European companies turning back on C.D.M. contracts – firms

A number of European companies which bought carbon credits from Chinese projects under the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism are turning back on previous commitments, according to a report from China Daily. Quoting company sources and project developers, the paper reported that some companies in the European Union, following the plummeting of carbon credit values, are refusing to pay pre-agreed prices, renegotiating agreements, and in some cases terminating contracts for carbon

Israeli company Blue Sphere Corporation is developing a gas collection system at an open landfill site in Takoradi, Ghana that would generate certified emission reductions tradable in the carbon market. The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly to reduce the emissions at the Sofokrom landfill. The initial investment in the project is expected to be approximately $700,000.

China and Russia are decrying the European Union’s aviation emission trading scheme as an infringement on other country’s sovereignty and a burden to global air carriers.In a joint statement, China’s Civil Aviation Administration and Russia’s Transport Ministry stated their opposition to the E.U.’s Emissions Trading Scheme which places a strict cap on the carbon dioxide emissions of all airlines flying to and around Europe starting January 2012.

Google reveals energy data for the first time, talks of ‘carbon neutrality’ Google Inc. has disclosed publicly for the first time exactly how much electricity the company’s massive computing resources consume, while laying out what it has been doing to limit carbon emissions. Google said the total amount of electricity it used for its operations in 2010 was roughly 2,260 megawatt-hours. Using figures from a study made by Stanford University professor Jonathan Koomey, the company said this represents 0.01 percent of the world's electricity.
